*****
(Sharadian)

The clouds hung heavy midway between the forest floor and the tree tops, haunting yet beautiful. Light attempted to pierce through the eerie blanket, to no avail. Sharadian sat on her perch from above him, her soul torn. If she went to him, he could reject her again. A fate she didn’t have the strength for. If she stayed where she was, and he learned of it, well, his wrath might destroy what was left of her sanity. And if she did nothing… “Tell me how to help him,” she cried with her face toward that persistent light.
Silence met her pleas. She deserved more than that. Why hasn’t He sent his guard to lock me away? Her eyes fixed on the Angel who held her heart in his hand. Maybe that was her problem all along. She gave Lars precedence over the Creator. A raven joined her on her perch. “I have failed him in more ways than I can count,” she confessed, swiping at the tears that refused to abate.
The intelligent bird turned toward her. Her gifts were not conducive to animals. But the trees were another story. Energy radiated from the branch to her core. Comfort, but something else lingered in the air as the cloud cover thickened. She fought to keep her eyes on Lars, but he disappeared behind the curtain that fell. “Please,” she implored on a sob and lost her hold, falling.
Damp, dead leaves stirred as she remained face down in the dirt. Her companion spread his wings, majestic in his black beauty, as she glanced up. “You’ve come to gloat,” she accused. “Watch the Gatekeeper’s fall from grace. Well, you’re too late. But, by all means, go ahead and mock me.”
Instead, the bird came closer and cawed. What was he trying to convey? Tell her she was a failure? Aware of all her mistakes, she pushed up to her knees but remained with her face on the ground. A strong flap of wings raised her hair and her gaze once more.
“What do you want from me?” she cried.
Another caw.
“I am sorry. Is that what you need to hear?” She reared back and screamed. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done!”
Black eyes searched hers when she finished. No trickery, just intelligence stared into her soul. He hopped forward, bobbed his head, and took flight. She remained on her knees, searching. “Figures. You’re a stupid girl for hoping that was somehow a sign of redemption,” she mumbled to herself.
“Negative self-talk only keeps you from doing what you’re supposed to do,” came a voice from behind.
She peered over her shoulder. “Laish, I’m a lost cause without a purpose.”
“I can’t disagree with you.” he scoffed. “But, Sharadian, I wouldn’t be here if that were true.”
She stood and faced him. “You just said you agreed with me.”
“I did. I do have my own opinions.”
Her eyes widened. “Why are you here?”
“To help you fix this epic error you have made,” he affirmed.
She shook her head. “There’s no fixing the fact I made a deal with the opposing team.”
“Yes, that was a grievous mistake. However, one that can be used for good.”
“How?” pacing before she stopped abruptly, “Ohhhhh, you want me to play both sides.”
He grinned slightly. “More or less.”
“But how can good ask for anything less than honest?”
“If you actually think that is what is being asked of you, then you do not understand the meaning of good,” he apprised.
“Right,” she sighed. “It can’t. So then…”
He stepped closer and placed his hand above her heart. “You must be certain this is not deceiving you.”
“Are you asking me to stop loving Lars?” The words alone brought a barrage of tears.
“Sharadian, love is not the problem. It never was.”
“Then, why?”
“You have all the answers, you just don’t want to accept them.”
She backed away. “That’s not true.”
“But it is.”
She wanted to refute him, to rage at his misunderstanding, but she couldn’t. He was right. She glanced up, but he was nowhere to be found. Figured. Once more, she was at a crossroads. If she chose wrong, many would get hurt. If chose right, some still might. There was no easy path. Both were hard and treacherous. She fell to her knees and wailed, “I can’t do this! Do you hear me? I cannot do this!”

Prologue
(Kian)

Kian stood respectfully before his superior, head bowed as the arguments prevailed against him.
Lars intervened, “As you can see, he has violated several of the rules that are clearly written and therefore, has lost his standing.”
“Silence, Fallen One,” the deep resonating voice of the Prince commanded. “Angel, what do you have to say for yourself?” he addressed Kian.
“I am guilty, Sir.”
A thoughtful nod confirmed. “The child is special and still needs protecting.”
He didn’t dare raise his head in excitement.
“But…you, Kian, need to learn from your mistakes.”
“Yes, Sir.”
Lars taunted, “I’ll take him with me.”
“Will you ever learn, Fallen One? This is discipline, not banishment. Be gone.”
Lars’ ear-splitting scream filled the air as he was hurled back to Hell.
The Prince stood in front of the mighty warrior. “I do hope you understand why I must do this.” He motioned to two other angels who stepped forward. “Bend.”
Kian knelt as they ripped the wings from his body, stripped him of his armor, and gave him the form of a man.
“You are hereby sentenced to one lifetime on Earth as a human.”
Kian gasped, not just from the physical pain he was in, but the emotional pain as well.
“Find the child named Cole McNeil and guard him. He will be a man of great power someday if you can protect him during the most vulnerable time of his life.”
He placed a hand on him. “I do hope you succeed, Kian.”
The floor of gold opened, and he hit the earth abruptly. Naked. He scrambled to his feet, searching his surroundings. Snow. Mountains. Pine trees. And he was freezing his ass off, along with a rather important body part—if he recalled correctly. With a quick glance down at the thing that dangled between his legs, he ensured he was all intact.
“Where the hell are your clothes?” came a female voice from behind him.
He turned with a hand over the part of him that made him male. “Not sure.” His voice was much the same as before, deep and low.
Her eyes widened, and her breathing grew more erratic. She yanked off her parka. “Cover your junk before it freezes and falls off.”
His head cocked to the side; her body did not match her words. “Yes, ma’am.”
She threw a wave over her shoulder and turned. “I’m by no means old enough to be a ma’am. Come on, let’s go get you in front of a fire. I won’t be held responsible for you being found in the spring thaw buck ass naked.”
He couldn’t help but grin. She was—what was that word he’d heard Mitch say?—“Sassy,” he said, snapping his fingers.
“You ain’t seen my sass yet, Mister.”

Excerpt

The shift in Landon was pressing against her chest like an anvil. Gone were all traces of the man she’d come to really like. He took rude and bossy to a whole new level. Worse than how he’d been when she first arrived. The more she contemplated it, the more she felt this was her doing, deciding she would go out of her way to be kind. After all, he was between a rock and a hard place, thanks to her. Seemed the least she could do was show a little compassion for his plight.

“I’ve got the dishes. You cooked,” he grumbled, taking the sponge from her hand.

“I don’t mind. It’s therapeutic,” she assured.

His glare made her check to see if she had something gross on her shirt. Her inspection came back clear. “Are you mad at me for something?” Stupid question! She scrunched her eyes tight waiting for the verbal blow to confirm her suspicions. Instead of pointing out the obvious, regarding her idiocy, he ignored her completely. And truth was, that made it worse. She tried again, “I’m sorry me being here has caused problems.”

His gaze bore into hers. “Little late for that.”

She gasped, “Oh my God! You’re blaming me.”

His shrug was anything but casual. “You ran into trouble and came here for help. Now your aunt is threatening to take my daughter. Explain how that has nothing to do with you.”

She struggled hard not to tell him to take a flying leap off the highest cliff he could find. “I’m sorry for any inconvenience I’ve caused you.”

“Don’t do that, Bliss,” he warned.

“Apologize?”

“That. But it’s more, and you know it.”

“Really. How about you go ahead and explain me to me!” Her hands on her hips as she stared him down. To hell with trying to be nice. She was sorry, but now, he’d crossed a line.

His laugh held a trace of cruelty. “You came here because you wanted to see me,” he dared her to deny it.

“Why are you doing this?” She stepped closer.

“Go ahead and lie to my face. Women in your family have been doing it for years.”

“Answer my question,” she demanded.

“Because I’m a dick. Thought you were in the loop on that one.”

She stood so close that his body heat was penetrating her skin. Oh, Lord have mercy, electricity danced from the almost touch. “I did want to see you.” The whispered confession blew across his neck.

He reached into the sink, and suddenly she screamed from the onslaught of a pan full of water dumped over her head. “That should cool you off,” he declared with a smugness to his tone that unleashed her fury.

Snatching a bowl, she threw soapy water in his face. “Tit for tat.”

He blinked rapidly from the sting, notching up his anger, he growled, “Hand me a towel.”

“Get it your fucking self,” she snarled, leaving the kitchen.

Excerpt

I spent another week in Prague. He was very busy, putting in fourteen to sixteen hour days. I occupied my time with some shopping and a little sightseeing. Others from the cast and crew spent a little time with me as well. I actually had a great time and a lot more understanding of what life was like for a movie actor.

Aidan was a phenomenal lover, always tender, as well as living up to his vow to bring me pleasure. We always fell asleep holding one another afterwards. I was going to feel cold and empty when I went home. Again, I pushed those morose feelings away. I had every intention of enjoying each second I had with him. I was bound and determined to live in the moment. Refusing to fret over what he meant to me, or how much I wanted and needed him in my life. He was truly my other half. I was smart enough to know that the beginning part of any relationship was easy. It was the years down the road, learning to work through all of life’s ups and downs together, that truly made a soul mate. Plus, I’d been around long enough to know, nothing stayed happy forever.

Excerpt

Something broke into my musing. Was that a creak I just heard? I paused, waiting, then heard a noise on the stairs. Uh-oh! I woke someone up.

Beth didn’t look up at first. Her hair was wild around her perfect face. Her eyes were still half closed from sleep. Oh, my! She was wearing a tank top with no bra and boxer shorts. Damn! I was drinking her in like a thirsty man eyeing a tall glass of ice water on a hot summer day. I was sure she would’ve slapped me if she were fully awake. I licked my lips. There was no question I wanted her. As if she could feel the heat I was generating, she looked up and our gazes locked. She startled. I thought she was going to scream so I placed my hand over her mouth. I’d approached her too fast and we fell onto the floor with a loud thump!

Her eyes went wide as she recognized who was on top of her. The expression on her face made her look adorable. I was trying not to laugh out loud so I held my lips in a tight line. I tilted my head to one side listening intently. I surmised that no one else woke up and moved my hand. I didn’t say a word. I simply leaned in to kiss her hello. I meant for it to be quick and sweet, however, she had other ideas.

She locked her hands behind my head, kissing me with a force she’d never used before. I was more than happy to reciprocate. Her supple, luscious lips moved with mine perfectly, as if she were the only woman I was ever meant to kiss. As my lips parted, her tongue traced my mouth and then she ever so slightly sucked on my bottom lip. I groaned, knowing I had to stop her before we did something she wasn’t quite ready for. Gently I tried pulling my face away. Every fiber of my being wanted more, so much more of her. And there she was beneath my body. I could feel every part of her. Her bodacious breasts pressed against my chest with those pert nipples begging for my mouth. I was thick and heavy, my body screaming for hers. I was about to become undone and take her. I had to stop thinking about all the ways I wanted to bring her pleasure. It would take time. I knew I had to move slowly with her. I was fully aware that she was gun shy. That sobered me up. Immediately I broke the kiss and stood, pulling her with me.

I hoped she didn’t misunderstand my actions. I grinned. “Hello.”

She smiled back. “Hi.”

I grew concerned. “Did I hurt you?”

She bit her bottom lip, blushing. “No, I’m good.”

At that moment, I wondered if it was as hard for her to stop as it was for me. I wasn’t sure how much more of this I could take. My self-control was being stretched way beyond what I thought I was capable of.

“Come with me.” I towed her into the living room where we snuggled on the couch. I easily fell asleep knowing, beyond a shadow of doubt, that I was holding the love of my life.

Tar’s lost in the halls of his own mind.

His body haunted by desires, his heart burning with a strange, familiar fire.

All he can think about is tasting her, knowing her, owning her.

But especially remembering her.

Excerpt

Trepidation filled her as she approached him, sleeping. She was cautious, leaning over and whispering in his ear, “I’ll always love you,” before kissing the side of his mouth. Shock filled her when a big hand fisted her hair and locked her lips to his. The kiss saying everything. Both pulled away breathless. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Tar reached up to catch them. “What’s wrong, Beautiful?”

“Oh, my God, you don’t remember!”

His face hardened. “I remember you giving up on us!” He pushed her away.

She crossed her arms over her chest. “What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t give up!” Her voice rising on the last two words.

“The fuck you didn’t,” he growled. “You. Let. Go.”

Her wide-eyed gaze on his. “I couldn’t hang on. Are you actually blaming me for that?”

Her finger tapping along the brace to make her point. “I sorta had a good reason!” she yelled, bringing Nik, E, and Lacey into the room.

E carefully eyed them. “Hey, you two need to lower your voices.”

“None of your fucking business, E,” Tar warned.

Nik stepped up. “Calm the fuck down.”

Tar’s eyes darted between the two brothers now standing in front of Keeley, forming a protective wall. A part of him respected the hell out of them for it. Another, wanted to beat the ever-loving shit out of them for stepping between him and the woman he loved. No matter how pissed off he was at her, he’d never hurt her. Didn’t they know that? He looked between them and settled his gaze on Keeley’s. “How’s your arm?”

She swallowed hard, still bewildered it was halfway healed and that she wouldn’t need the brace for long. The doctor informed her that he didn’t see any complications arising if she took care of herself. She recalled how, once more, he was amazed by the unexplainable phenomenon. But Keeley knew the reason behind it all, her guardian angel. And as she stared at Tar, she knew he too received healing. Or did he? “What happened earlier?”

“Ladies first.” His annoyance coming through for having to speak to her with bodyguards between them.

E glanced over at Nik, nodding. They stepped to the side but close enough to help if Keeley needed it. That was not lost on Tar as he shot both a fuck-you look, earning him a deep chuckle from the brothers. Keeley took a step closer to the bed. “It doesn’t hurt. Breaks are clean and healing.”

“That’s odd. I would’ve thought you’d be in that brace for a good six weeks.” He angled his head trying to figure it out.

She huffed, “Don’t look at me like that.”

His brow raised. “Like what?”

“Like I’m a freak! And what about you?” Her irritation came through loud and clear.

He reached for her hand, lightly stroking. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel foolish.”

Her other hand was gently caressing his hairline. “Your head’s okay?”

A cough interrupted them. “Listen, Tar. You promise to be a good boy?” E quirked a brow at him.

“Yes, Dad,” Tar retorted.

Nik added, “You better.”

E chuckled and nudged Nik out of the room.

Lacey was still sitting in a chair. “Okay if I go?” she asked Keeley.

“We’re good,” Keeley replied, gazing into Tar’s amazing emeralds.

Lacey politely closed the door behind her to give them privacy.

“Come here,” Tar’s voice rumbled low as he pulled Keeley to him.

She was now on top of him looking down at his handsome face. “Are you going to explain?”

He cupped her jaw.  “Just a concussion, which brought on a killer headache.”

“Why were so many people in here then?” Her fingers threading his hair.

“They thought I was a danger to myself.” He leaned up to tenderly nip along her lips.

Her breathing hitched. “More like to me.”

His tongue softly stroked the outside of her mouth. “That too.”

“And the flash back you had?” She parted her lips more to give him access.

“Common,” he growled before accepting her invitation.

With each slide of their tongues, grip of their hands, Tar and Keeley were forgiving each other. Love mingled with need. Bodies demanding their union. Neither caring that anyone could walk in on them. The moment belonged to them and them alone.
