Excerpt

*****
(Sharadian)

The clouds hung heavy midway between the forest floor and the tree tops, haunting yet beautiful. Light attempted to pierce through the eerie blanket, to no avail. Sharadian sat on her perch from above him, her soul torn. If she went to him, he could reject her again. A fate she didn’t have the strength for. If she stayed where she was, and he learned of it, well, his wrath might destroy what was left of her sanity. And if she did nothing… “Tell me how to help him,” she cried with her face toward that persistent light.
Silence met her pleas. She deserved more than that. Why hasn’t He sent his guard to lock me away? Her eyes fixed on the Angel who held her heart in his hand. Maybe that was her problem all along. She gave Lars precedence over the Creator. A raven joined her on her perch. “I have failed him in more ways than I can count,” she confessed, swiping at the tears that refused to abate.
The intelligent bird turned toward her. Her gifts were not conducive to animals. But the trees were another story. Energy radiated from the branch to her core. Comfort, but something else lingered in the air as the cloud cover thickened. She fought to keep her eyes on Lars, but he disappeared behind the curtain that fell. “Please,” she implored on a sob and lost her hold, falling.
Damp, dead leaves stirred as she remained face down in the dirt. Her companion spread his wings, majestic in his black beauty, as she glanced up. “You’ve come to gloat,” she accused. “Watch the Gatekeeper’s fall from grace. Well, you’re too late. But, by all means, go ahead and mock me.”
Instead, the bird came closer and cawed. What was he trying to convey? Tell her she was a failure? Aware of all her mistakes, she pushed up to her knees but remained with her face on the ground. A strong flap of wings raised her hair and her gaze once more.
“What do you want from me?” she cried.
Another caw.
“I am sorry. Is that what you need to hear?” She reared back and screamed. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done!”
Black eyes searched hers when she finished. No trickery, just intelligence stared into her soul. He hopped forward, bobbed his head, and took flight. She remained on her knees, searching. “Figures. You’re a stupid girl for hoping that was somehow a sign of redemption,” she mumbled to herself.
“Negative self-talk only keeps you from doing what you’re supposed to do,” came a voice from behind.
She peered over her shoulder. “Laish, I’m a lost cause without a purpose.”
“I can’t disagree with you.” he scoffed. “But, Sharadian, I wouldn’t be here if that were true.”
She stood and faced him. “You just said you agreed with me.”
“I did. I do have my own opinions.”
Her eyes widened. “Why are you here?”
“To help you fix this epic error you have made,” he affirmed.
She shook her head. “There’s no fixing the fact I made a deal with the opposing team.”
“Yes, that was a grievous mistake. However, one that can be used for good.”
“How?” pacing before she stopped abruptly, “Ohhhhh, you want me to play both sides.”
He grinned slightly. “More or less.”
“But how can good ask for anything less than honest?”
“If you actually think that is what is being asked of you, then you do not understand the meaning of good,” he apprised.
“Right,” she sighed. “It can’t. So then…”
He stepped closer and placed his hand above her heart. “You must be certain this is not deceiving you.”
“Are you asking me to stop loving Lars?” The words alone brought a barrage of tears.
“Sharadian, love is not the problem. It never was.”
“Then, why?”
“You have all the answers, you just don’t want to accept them.”
She backed away. “That’s not true.”
“But it is.”
She wanted to refute him, to rage at his misunderstanding, but she couldn’t. He was right. She glanced up, but he was nowhere to be found. Figured. Once more, she was at a crossroads. If she chose wrong, many would get hurt. If chose right, some still might. There was no easy path. Both were hard and treacherous. She fell to her knees and wailed, “I can’t do this! Do you hear me? I cannot do this!”

Tar’s lost in the halls of his own mind.

His body haunted by desires, his heart burning with a strange, familiar fire.

All he can think about is tasting her, knowing her, owning her.

But especially remembering her.

Excerpt

Trepidation filled her as she approached him, sleeping. She was cautious, leaning over and whispering in his ear, “I’ll always love you,” before kissing the side of his mouth. Shock filled her when a big hand fisted her hair and locked her lips to his. The kiss saying everything. Both pulled away breathless. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Tar reached up to catch them. “What’s wrong, Beautiful?”

“Oh, my God, you don’t remember!”

His face hardened. “I remember you giving up on us!” He pushed her away.

She crossed her arms over her chest. “What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t give up!” Her voice rising on the last two words.

“The fuck you didn’t,” he growled. “You. Let. Go.”

Her wide-eyed gaze on his. “I couldn’t hang on. Are you actually blaming me for that?”

Her finger tapping along the brace to make her point. “I sorta had a good reason!” she yelled, bringing Nik, E, and Lacey into the room.

E carefully eyed them. “Hey, you two need to lower your voices.”

“None of your fucking business, E,” Tar warned.

Nik stepped up. “Calm the fuck down.”

Tar’s eyes darted between the two brothers now standing in front of Keeley, forming a protective wall. A part of him respected the hell out of them for it. Another, wanted to beat the ever-loving shit out of them for stepping between him and the woman he loved. No matter how pissed off he was at her, he’d never hurt her. Didn’t they know that? He looked between them and settled his gaze on Keeley’s. “How’s your arm?”

She swallowed hard, still bewildered it was halfway healed and that she wouldn’t need the brace for long. The doctor informed her that he didn’t see any complications arising if she took care of herself. She recalled how, once more, he was amazed by the unexplainable phenomenon. But Keeley knew the reason behind it all, her guardian angel. And as she stared at Tar, she knew he too received healing. Or did he? “What happened earlier?”

“Ladies first.” His annoyance coming through for having to speak to her with bodyguards between them.

E glanced over at Nik, nodding. They stepped to the side but close enough to help if Keeley needed it. That was not lost on Tar as he shot both a fuck-you look, earning him a deep chuckle from the brothers. Keeley took a step closer to the bed. “It doesn’t hurt. Breaks are clean and healing.”

“That’s odd. I would’ve thought you’d be in that brace for a good six weeks.” He angled his head trying to figure it out.

She huffed, “Don’t look at me like that.”

His brow raised. “Like what?”

“Like I’m a freak! And what about you?” Her irritation came through loud and clear.

He reached for her hand, lightly stroking. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel foolish.”

Her other hand was gently caressing his hairline. “Your head’s okay?”

A cough interrupted them. “Listen, Tar. You promise to be a good boy?” E quirked a brow at him.

“Yes, Dad,” Tar retorted.

Nik added, “You better.”

E chuckled and nudged Nik out of the room.

Lacey was still sitting in a chair. “Okay if I go?” she asked Keeley.

“We’re good,” Keeley replied, gazing into Tar’s amazing emeralds.

Lacey politely closed the door behind her to give them privacy.

“Come here,” Tar’s voice rumbled low as he pulled Keeley to him.

She was now on top of him looking down at his handsome face. “Are you going to explain?”

He cupped her jaw.  “Just a concussion, which brought on a killer headache.”

“Why were so many people in here then?” Her fingers threading his hair.

“They thought I was a danger to myself.” He leaned up to tenderly nip along her lips.

Her breathing hitched. “More like to me.”

His tongue softly stroked the outside of her mouth. “That too.”

“And the flash back you had?” She parted her lips more to give him access.

“Common,” he growled before accepting her invitation.

With each slide of their tongues, grip of their hands, Tar and Keeley were forgiving each other. Love mingled with need. Bodies demanding their union. Neither caring that anyone could walk in on them. The moment belonged to them and them alone.

Excerpt

Each sat at the table caught in the seriousness of the situation. Chase might be dead and they needed confirmation one way or the other. He was key to Keeley’s strategy. Goddamn plan was what set them all on edge. Could they really support such an out of the box idea? Then again, it was the only choice that made sense.

“You understand that you may not come back from this, baby girl?” Nik held her gaze with firm conviction that she wasn’t seeing this clearly.

Keeley nodded in response.

His responsibility to be the voice of reason. “No. You answer me loud and clear. Because I’m not just talking physically.”

Her head angled. “What do you mean?”

“He’s saying,” E cocked his jaw, “you may not come back mentally or emotionally from this.”

Mitch leveled his gaze on hers from across the table. “And even if you come back unscathed, you may lose Tar forever.” He sighed. “Have you considered the two options carefully?”

“Two?” Her brows scrunched with consideration. She thought she’d weighed the possibilities before ever speaking up.

“One…he won’t ever regain his memory to care what you’ve done.” He held up his second finger. “Two…he’ll never, ever forgive you for something that damn near tore out his heart once before.”

“Wait!” E came to her defense. “Do you honestly think she’d actually let another man touch her sexually after that debacle with Braxton?”

Mitch’s brows were raised. Keeley’s eyes darted from E to Nik to Mitch. A cold settled over her as her pulse raced. Not out of the desire for pain but fear she couldn’t stop herself if presented with the opportunity. Tar’s anguish danced through her memory. How she almost destroyed their love over a fucking addiction she never wanted. With a deep fortifying breath, she met each pair of eyes. Resolve settling in her gut as she declared, “God as my witness, I will do everything in my power to save the man I love. If, at any point, I feel that I’m incapable of this operation, rest assured, I know how to phone home.”

E’s lips raised in a slight smile. “Atta girl.”

“Okay then,” Nik placed his hand on her shoulder.

Mitch stood. “Let’s get this show on the road.”

Keeley watched each man take his leave. What they didn’t quite comprehend was that she not only wanted to do this for Tar, she needed to do it for herself. She had to know if she really could stand in and sacrifice it all for love. Her heart demanded she learn to fight when everything screamed turn and run. She pushed back from the table and caught her reflection from a mirror on the wall. “Time to see what you’re really made of, Keeley Ann. Sink or swim.”

Excerpt

Un-fucking-believable! She actually managed to make sense when all of his training told him how wrong she was. Mitch wore a hole in the carpet, his steps agitated and his mood dangerously close to rage. He spun on her, “Keeley, for fuck’s sake, I hear your logic, but you have no experience to back it up with.”

She met him toe to toe. “I know how these clubs work. And I know how recovery works. Don’t you tell me that just because I’m not a soldier I have no clue what I’m doing.”

His exasperation coming through on a growl. “Do not act as if I don’t understand the healing process. He’s my fucking best friend. You think I want him alone in a hospital with a murderer after HIM!”

The roar was deafening but she refused to step back or back down. “Playing the man card. Really? Don’t stand there flexing your fists and puffing out your chest unless you plan on handling this like a man.”

His smirk was cocky as hell. “You wanna have a go? By all means, Princess, let’s do it.”

They marched into the gym where the mats were, both throwing off their shirts. Mitch stood there with finely honed muscles, a man who trained daily and was no stranger to a good fight. Yet Keeley was no wimp. Far from it. Her sports bra didn’t begin to cover the taut muscles of a woman who knew her way around a gym and could also fight, he’d seen her in action. Shelby limped in. “Mary mother of Jesus, you two play nice,” she ordered.

Keeley glanced over, “Lay the ground rules,” she grit out.

“Alright, I want a fair fight. You have eight rounds of full contact. Winner gets to call how we proceed with this mission.”

E walked in and made his way between Mitch and Keeley. “What the fuck are you thinking?” His gaze darting from one to the other.

Keeley spoke up, “He needs to see that my balls are every bit as big as his.”

E’s eyes widened at that. “Damn, girl, you really are a tigress.”

She responded with a tight nod of her head.

His leveled gaze now on Mitch’s. “She right?”

He scoffed, “She seems to think because I don’t want her at that hospital means I don’t give a shit about Tar. About time this little girl learned chain of command.”

Keeley taunted, “Bring it, big man,” as she circled him.

Shelby put a hand on E and pulled. “You better move.”

“They’re serious,” he said in utter disbelief.

“And stupid, but that’s beside the point,” she grumbled.

E smiled at her. “Saucy woman.”

“So you all keep saying,” she huffed.

Mitch got in the first strike, throwing Keeley back, but she didn’t stay there. Her instincts coming in to play as she used the training he, Leith, and Tar had given her. The kick was high for someone so tiny, and he saw why as her foot made contact with the side of his jaw. “Nice jump kick,” he praised, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth.

The fight remained fair—and beside his better judgement, Mitch was trying to go easy on her—until things really got rowdy.

“Round six,” Shelby called out.

Mitch finally got her to the ground when E stepped in. “No. That’s enough of this bullshit.” But E didn’t see Keeley’s move to get on her feet. She went for a round house kick with E in the line of fire. He laughed as she knocked him to his ass. “Very nice. Teach me not to watch my backside.”

“I’m sorry,” she muttered.

“Don’t be,” E assured.

Mitch used the distraction and took her down where they began to grapple. He had her in a hold where most grown men would’ve tapped out. Keeley was neither a man nor would she accept defeat. Her tiny frame gave her some serious advantages, along with a limberness he was unaccustomed to. She flipped him and got the upper hand. He was howling in pain as she pulled back hard enough one could hear his body protesting. She whispered, “Tap. The fuck. Out.”

Keeley reached forward to smooth out that deep V between his eyes and heard his deep intake of breath. So much to say but she wasn’t sure how long her voice would cooperate, or if he’d be able to hear her raspy whisper. Frustration filled her, spilling down her cheeks, which brought more worry to his brutally handsome face. “I’m sorry. So, so sorry for hurting you.” She wiped the flowing tears away and continued, “Sorry for lying to you. I sh-should…”

“No. No. No should’ve. It’s not all your fault, Keeley. I owe you an apology, too.” She leaned within kissing distance and he sweetly pulled out of range. Next, he hit his knees before her but never broke eye contact. “I failed you. I let you down. I broke a promise. A man is nothing without his word. I violated that in the most dishonorable of ways.” More tears streamed down her beautiful face as she shook her head. “Yes, I did. You know it’s true.” His hand was now above her left breast against her heart. He felt it beating harder. “You feel it,” not a little awe in his voice laced with hope. “Let me make it up to you. Show you how sorry I am. Prove to you that your love is enough. That we can work through this and be stronger.” Her breathing hitched but she was still shaking her head. “Your darkness doesn’t scare me, Tigress. Please, can I have another chance to prove that to you?” He waited on baited breath. This was it. That question determined it all.

Their future.

Their love.

She held his heart in the palm of her tiny hand.

God, the man was breathtaking. She did not deserve him. The kind thing to do would be to set him free. But her heart, her soul refused. “I’ve made mistakes. Some…unforgivable.” Her head dropped while she stared at the floor.

Firm fingers lifted her chin. “Look at me, Keeley Ann Kincaid.”

She didn’t want to. Had no desire to see his disappointment or chastisement. Again, she focused in another direction.

He sighed heavily. “You’re killing me here, Viper. Please look at me,” he begged.

That got her attention and brought her tear filled gaze to his. What she saw stole her breath. Unadulterated love danced in his gorgeous emerald eyes. Brighter from the unshed tears he held at bay. She couldn’t help but study how they clung to his thick raven lashes. For her. He was pleading for her forgiveness, for her love. For a second chance. “All that is shattered can be mended,” she barely whispered and locked her little fingers around his large ones on her chin, shifting them away.

Everything about the man screamed danger, so, of course, I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Confidence radiated off of him in waves. I was immediately reminded of how you could tell a man made love by the way he danced. Although I was not delusional, this man would not make love. No. He would fuck. The thought made me wet. All of a sudden, I became aware of several things at once: He inexorably danced me into the shadows while Michael Bublé sang, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” The actual performer was there live, and, honestly, I couldn’t imagine a better song for how I felt at that moment. The next thing I knew, he had pulled me through a door I never noticed before.
I looked up at him and inquired, “Where are you taking me?”
His lips curved up slightly as he replied, “Somewhere quiet.”
Oh, my word. I had let a complete stranger drag me away from everyone and everything. And damn, if the idea didn’t excite me more. You would think I’d be a bit more concerned about my safety. For all I knew, this guy was an axe murderer. Yet, for some reason, I completely trusted him. I knew he would never hurt me physically. Although I was quite sure, the man had left more than one broken heart in his wake.
We slipped into a small library/office. The room was dimly lit; thus, I reached over to turn on a lamp sitting on a side table.
“Don’t,” he murmured.
I really wanted to know how his voice truly sounded. So far, the few words he had spoken were all whispered; therefore, I couldn’t hear it clearly. I did catch a slight rasp with a hint of some kind of accent but nothing discernable. Gah! The man became more frustrating by the moment. I heard the door lock, and then he was in front of me. He caressed up and down my sides, nibbling along my neck. I leaned to the side to give him better access, all the while I made little mewling noises.
He suckled the tender spot just below my earlobe. “Tell me to stop if I’ve misread the attraction between us,” he demanded.
No way in hell I was doing that. The electricity was arcing between our bodies with a mind of its own. Instead, I begged for more. “Please.”
